Frequently Asked Questions

  • It is key for you to be matched with a therapist with the personal style, energy and expertise that fits well for you, for your needs and for your comfort. This unique relationship — and your personal commitment — is crucial for success.

    Consultations come in two forms.

Usually, we start with a brief, complimentary 15-minute phone call to ask questions and get an initial sense of your needs and consider together the therapist who will likely you fit you best. You may wish to ask questions about my style and experience. I will certainly be curious about your situation and your hopes and expectations about therapy. There is no cost to you and no commitment to continue.

If it feels right for you, we will schedule a 50-minute initial appointment. An initial appointment is a paid therapy session. It is an opportunity for you to get a sense of what it is like to work with me, to get help right away and come to an understanding about the focus of therapy together and how best to proceed — with no obligation to continue after this first meeting.

And, of course, if we are a good fit together, at the end of the session we will schedule a weekly appointment time that is exclusively yours.

  • Psychotherapy involves one weekly 50-minute session.

I do not offer biweekly or monthly sessions at this time.

The challenge you wish to focus on, your life circumstances and your commitment to the work will determine the length of therapy. You are always in control of how long you choose to utilize the therapy process.

At times, you may prefer a “double” session, especially for EMDR treatment, which can be more effective in 100 minute sessions.

  • As someone who has experienced therapy myself, I recognize that therapy is a financial and emotional investment, and as such, you should choose a provider that fits your needs, personality, and budget.

My fee for weekly, individual psychotherapy and trauma treatment is $300. Each weekly session is 50-minutes long.

I charge a prorated fee longer sessions and half-day intensives. Feel free to ask for more information if this interests you.

My practice is an out-of-network provider and will work with you to maximize your out-of-network coverage reimbursement with your insurance provider.

Each week, you will pay your session fee at the time of your weekly session and my practice will provide you with a receipt to submit directly to your insurance companies in order to receive partial or full reimbursement, depending on your plan.

Most PPO insurance plans reimburse once a person has reached their out-of-pocket deductible. Therapy can also be paid for with pre-tax dollars from your Flexible Spending Account (FSA) or Health Savings Account (HSA), both fantastic options.

Below are some questions to ask your insurance company if you plan to use your out-of-network benefits:

Does my plan include mental health benefits and do I need preauthorization to access those benefits?

What is the deductible under my plan and has part or all of it been satisfied?

What percentage of the cost of treatment will be my responsibility once my deductible has been met?

Is there a limit to the number of sessions my plan will cover?

You have the right to receive a “Good Faith Estimate,” an estimate explaining how much your medical and mental health care will cost. Under a new 2022 law, health care providers need to give individuals who don’t have insurance or who are not using in-or-out-of-network insurance an estimate of the expected charges for medical services, including psychotherapy services.

You can ask me, or any other provider you choose, for a Good Faith Estimate before you schedule a service. If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than your Good Faith Estimate, you can dispute the bill. Make sure to save a copy or picture of your Good Faith Estimate.

For questions or more information about the Good Faith Estimate program you can contact www.cms.gov/nosurprises.

  • 2024: At this time, and due to the ongoing mental health fallout from the Covid pandemic, my reduced fee spaces, reserved for frontline workers and students, are currently full. I can refer you to other providers who may be a better fit financially or offer a reduced fee experience.

I strongly believe that quality therapy should be accessible to everyone. If my fee is beyond your financial means but you’d like therapy, please reach out as I have a limited number of spaces available at a reduced fee rate. These spaces are typically reserved for students (without parental support) and other individuals in a truly low-income situation. If you feel you qualify for a sliding scale, please ask about this during our initial phone consultation.

  • Our discussions will remain confidential, subject to certain legal requirements to disclose in the case of risk of harm to yourself, harm to others, child or elder abuse or personal or professional legal proceedings. Insurance plans require periodic disclosure of clinical updates for treatment certification purposes.

  • Research tells us that the effectiveness of therapy rests on consistent, weekly sessions together.

    Weekly sessions

We will choose a regular in-person or virtual appointment time and frequency (weekly or twice-weekly) and I will reserve the hours exclusively for you (e.g., “every Monday at 2:45 pm”) with the expectation that you will do the same.

My practice does not offer standing bi-weekly or monthly sessions, unless we’re wrapping up together.

Rescheduling is always preferred over cancellation for consistency and effectiveness of sessions. I will make every effort to reschedule your session if something comes up. In the event that you are out of town, home-bound or need additional support, virtual sessions are available and encouraged.

However, unless you are experiencing a true medical emergency for you or for a loved one, all sessions canceled in under 48 business hours (i.e., 2 business days = Monday-Friday) are charged your session fee. I will make every effort to reschedule canceled sessions within the same week, at no additional fee. If you did not provide 2 days advance notice and we are not able to reschedule within that time frame, you will still be responsible for paying the full amount of our session.

  • Whomever you love, whatever you believe, however you express yourself, my practice welcomes and is made for all racial, ethnic, sexual and gender identities and relationship + life expressions.

My practice understands that systemic oppression lives as trauma in the nervous systems of individuals from both dominant and marginalized groups. Microaggressions in psychotherapy perpetuate culturally oppressive systems and cause long-lasting harm. We are committed to ongoing knowledge seeking, reflection + action to deliberately oppose + interrupt racism. We believe that we can only address intergenerational trauma, complex PTSD + racial trauma, through practices rooted in anti-racism + social justice.
